Sun. Nov. 11, 2007 - 4:00pm CONCERT #1 - OLZHYCH: POETRY IN MUSIC,- The eloquent and powerful poetry of Ukrainian poet Oleh Kandyba (pseudonym Olzhych) found its place in Ukrainian literature of the early 20th century. This one-time professor of Harvard returned to Ukraine in 1939 to fight for its independence and was murdered by the Nazis. This concert celebrates the 100th anniversary of his birth. As Olzhych? commanding literary works have rarely been put to music, Vesnivka has commissioned Toronto-based composer Zenoby Lawryshyn to write music to the words of Olzhych. This new work, entitled ?The Prophecy, will be in three parts and will feature choir and soloists. Guest performers will include young talents from the Toronto area, who are currently studying at the Glenn Gould School of Music / Royal Conservatory of Music. : All Saints' Kingsway 2850 Bloor St. W (at Prince Edward Drive)Toronto. Sun Jan 13, 2008, 4:00 pm CONCERT # 2 - UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS CONCERT: CROSSOVER Featuring The Toronto Ukrainian Male Chamber Choir. This annual sold-out traditional Christmas Concert is held in early January as part of the celebrations for Canadians of Ukrainian descent. A thank you reception follows the concert where members of the audience have an opportunity to meet with the choristers as an out-reach program. This year?s concert will feature a selection of the season?s music that crosses over from old favourites to new arrangements by two Ukrainian Canadian composers. These melodies, sometimes playful and light-hearted, and at other times melancholy or despondent, celebrate the various stages of life, such as motherhood, carefree youth, unrequited love, courtship and marriage. The Ukrainian folk song tradition is rich with imagery and conveys an array of emotions, from humour, love and innocence to sorrow and despair. With many of these songs in its repertoire, Vesnivka looks to preserve the Ukrainian folk song tradition for future generations.
